The MVA will send you a notice a few months before it is due. Even then, you can request an extension for a few reasons. And if you fail emissions, they give you a list of stuff that needs fixed, and you just get it taken care of.

It's really no big hassle. The VEIP places are drive through. They usually just hook a sensor up to the OBD-II. For older vehicles, they may use the sniffer.

But you can relax until you hear from the MVA.

And it's only like 20-30 bucks to get tested.
