The only temporary smell is the oil residue or some muffler packing (on applicable exhausts) burning off. Usually that smell goes away after a day or two of driving.

LTHs, however, delete the cats so you have raw exhaust gasses passing through. That smell never goes away.

Benefit of LTH over HFC... assuming the factory manifolds are restrictive a well designed LTH system will flow better. LTHs increase the length of the primaries and move the collector back quite a bit, which can help with scavenging efficiency.
