Otherwise if I got it wrong, let's have a track name so we can all revel in the skill with which you ran "mostly in 5th gear with some downshifts to 4th and 3rd."
Given that performance it's no wonder you feel the Z didn't have enough power. Most people use the gears the other way round for power reasons, and say, e.g., "I never got out of 3rd or 4th, esp. on such-n-such a tight "track".
BTW, how do you figure you and an S4 "in the same class"? Are you talking about High School
