Personally, I have seen temps as high as 255 degrees this past summer when I ran the car hard. Limp mode starts at around 280 degrees I believe.

Any prolonged spirited driving (like our mid-A cruises) can get our temps up really quick. I know Shahid was telling me he almost hit limp mode on one of the cruises.

For the most part though, you are right. For daily driving around town and a few quick acceleration bursts won't warrant an oil cooler. I plan to autocross and do some HPDE's this year so I want to invest in a small oil cooler so I can have some fun on the track.
That was only on one of the cruises though, the rest I was fine. A couple minutes in a higher gear took care of that problem though.
