$29800 is way too much for the car that is full retail, if you are smart you never pay more than the trade in value for a used car, because it is a well known fact that dealers never really ever pay more than THE WHOLESALE PRICE for a used car when it is traded, unless it is a very low mileage car or a collector item etc.

These are the values for this 370Z 2009 touring

Retail $29,800
Private party - $27,000
trade in -$24,300
wholesale -$21,300

They key thing to remember here is that kellybluebook and edmunds used to list the actual dealer wholesale cost of a used car, but they dropped that figure and replaced it with a private party sale price. The factor for determining the actual whole cost of what a dealer paid for the car is to look at the range between all for prices, the example above shows a $3000 price spread between each of the upper figures. Now take $3000 spread and subtract it for the Trade in price of $24,300 - $3000 = $21,300 actual dealer cost.

The true cost of what you should pay for this car is between the wholesale and trade in price, $22,300 would actually be a good deal on this car. Dealer makes a $1000 profit which is more than enough.

The important thing to remember is that if for some reason you had to sell the car the very next day on a used car or a left over is that no dealer is going to give you more than the wholesale value to take it off your hands.

This is some of the dirty little secrets dealers don't want consumers to know.
