I actually did this recently. My girlfriend brought over her Corolla for me to change the oil on it. I was in a hurry and not paying enough attention, and her engine oil and trans fluid both have similar drain plugs underneath, just in different spots.

Drained the ATF into the drain pan, and even thought to myself, "wow, that oil sure looks clean for how many miles it has, kinda reddish too, what brand did they put in here?". When the flow had mostly subsided, then I went to pull off the oil filter. Of course it gushed out a very different-looking oil at a much higher volume than I expected, and then everything clicked in my brain and I got it all sorted out and refilled properly
