You can make 400rwhp with stock displacement. You can make 400 rwhp with less than stock displacement. You just have to build everything else in the engine around the goal. The smaller displacement an engine is, the faster it will have to spin to produce the power. To increase displacement is typical in all-motor builds so that less RPM is required and therefore the cam profiles and intake manifold design doesnt have to be as far optimized for high RPM, therefore maintaining better low engine power and engine response for a nicer driving car. Ever drive a S2000? They well over 100hp per liter but they are 9000rpm engines... their low end power sucks even with the fact there it has VTEC allowing 2 seperate cam profiles.
The 370z, since it has VVEL and continuously variable cam timing, means that the valve timing and lift can be optimized for all RPMS dynamically, meaning it wont hardly suffer losses of low engine power from building it to spin faster and make greater top end power. If you could do it with the stock intake manifold, in theory I dont know if there would be any low end losses?
If you had a 4.5L, I bet you could make 400rwhp by 8500rpm. Older VQs are notorious for grenading oil pumps and therefore destroying half the engine when spinning 8500-9500rpm. The VQ37VHR may or may not have the same oil pump problems, we will find out over time.
As for cracking VVEL... VVEL seems to be a really advanced closed loop feedback system that is continously optimizing itself. I cannot imagine that any ALL MOTOR cars are going to gain anything at all from playing with it... im sure its extremely optimized already from the factory. But I doubt that the VVEL system is boost smart... meaning I doubt it is optimizing as well as it could when you boost feed the VHR engine. This is probably a good portion of why the 370z makes like 100 less torque that the older DEs do at the same HP when boosted.
I would get Sam's opinions on what he thinks could be gained from the VVEL.. I think he is probably the one in communication with UpRev the most about whats going on with the progress on the VVEL recalibration and any existing results from toying with it.
edit; BTW there is a VQ35DE all-motor that broke 500hp on the engine dyno, so thats right about 400rwhp im sure.
