The steel I use as a target is 1/2 inch thick AR500 armor plate. I shoot it from 50 yards or more with .223 and 10 yards or more with 9mm/.40 cal. Hang the plate with a little bit of downward angle and always wear eyepro.
You can generally use 1/4 inch mild steel as a target for handguns, but a .223 will go right through mild steel like it was butter.
