The lower the f-stop, the larger your aperture is... the larger the aperture, the smaller the depth of field (range of distances which are in focus) is. This can produce some really cool effects, like having the Z in focus up close, but having the background out of focus, like you have in your third photo. But if you're not careful about focus, it can also leave you with blurry shots.

If you're not going for those sorts of depth-of-field shots, you can compensate for this by setting your camera to aperture priority, and setting a high f-stop (like 8, or higher if your camera/lens has it). This will generally result in sharper images, where if any part of the image is in focus, the whole of it will be.
