Well, IMHO the whole way they went about handling fluids for the 7AT is broken by design, so it's still their problem. At the very very least, they should have made it possible to accurately fill this transmission (by their own specs) without using a super expensive dealership-only tool. They could have done this with one of two minimal changes:

1) Delivered the AT fluid temp data on a standard OBD-II PID that any scanner can read, allowing the service manual directions to be followed by anyone, or:

2) Re-written the instructions to use some other piece of temp data, e.g. an IR thermometer pointed at the base of the pan after a certain warmup cycle while ambient temps are within a certain range.

It really bugs me that nobody but my dealer can officially even tell whether my transmission is filled to the proper level or not.
