I had hood struts on my last Z for over 2 years without any problems. Yes, you do have to push down with some force to lower the hood, but not the entire way down. There's supposed to be a threshold point where the struts are compressed enough that gravity takes over and shuts the hood. I could see this being a problem with a carbon fiber hood, assuming it's a quality piece that weighs considerably less. Another situation that would make me worry is if the struts are too strong. I'll definitely buy a kit when one is available.
