I'm probably the wrong one to ask. All my guns get run hard and I've always stayed with brands that have demonstrated that they can take it. Cost hasn't been something I've ever taken much into account so there are definitely gaps in my personal knowledge relative to consumer-grade weapons. Double Star's reputation among the people I shoot with is suspect, but I'm not personally familiar with the brand. I have seen Bushies, DPMS, and RRA's fail with a relatively high degree of consistency in high round count courses, but I've never seen a Double Star run. Relative to that brand, I can only recount conventional wisdom from guys I know who shoot a lot.

As to vertical grips...I don't use 'em much anymore, mostly just low-profile hand stops, although I am currently using an AFG on my SBR. Jury's still out on that one for me, but I'm going to shoot it at this TriCon course.
