HA! I'll come at you. I read this interview earlier this morning over on Telegraph. You're right, I don't think you can blame the man for being honest. Telegraph added this subtext to the title of their article:
Is it the diving, the play-acting, the posing or the perceived arrogance that makes Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo such a hate figure for opposing fans?
I don't hate on Ronaldo, like a lot of other people like to do. Sure the diving and play-acting gets old, but honestly, is what he does any different than what you would see from Xavi, Iniesta or Pedro? Sure he's rich, and he likes to spend his money, which is the same as any other rich footballer. Professional athlete for that matter. I can guarantee if Barca were to ever sell Leo Messi (and they won't), they would ask somewhere in the neighborhood of €100 million, which is EXACTLY what United asked Madrid for Ronaldo's services a few years ago. So why do people frown at Madrid for paying United that fee? And how is Ronaldo under attack for HIS club making an offer to another club? When you're a player, and under contract, you are that clubs property. They can sell or loan you for whatever they feel is market value. And in regards to money, according to a Forbes report, Leo is banking 32 mil a year himself, so its not like he is playing for Barca for free. I'm not sure how Messi and Barcelona have become saints and Ronaldo and Madrid are the devil. I can only imagine how different this situation would be had he been wearing the Barca stripes instead of the white Madrid shirt.
Ronaldo is a supremely talented footballer, and I like watching the man play. I'd equate him to Kobe Bryant. They both play for one of the biggest sporting franchises in the world, and they're both one of the best players in their respective sport. Both hated on for their abilities and confidence.
One last thing: Lets not forget the original football playboy, George Best. Remember what he did in on and off the pitch the 60s and 70s, and he's considered one of the best players of all time. Maradonna wasn't exactly a saint either in the 80s. I don't think any football fan can honestly say that at his peak, Maradonna wasn't arrogant. And he's also regarded as one of, if not the best player of all time. The more things change, the more they stay the same. To me, Ronaldo is no different.
