I just went to an empty parking lot a played around with it a bit. I think the ECU is actually measuring not only how far you push the pedal but how fast you push it down as well. I push it down slightly in a slow manner and the car moves forward in a nice average pace; however, if I push it down about the same distance but do it very quickly the car will move forward very aggressively even though its still under 4000 rpm.
Looks like Nissan refined the throttle by wire to be predict your current driving situation and react accordingly. The more I play with it the more I realize how intuitive it really is.
