Hmm. When I was younger with little kids, I went with a modified Camaro for the back seats, cheap price, and it was great I coud still have a blast while hauling the wife and two kids. But really what you need with a family is two or even three cars. Now I have 3 kids, the Z and a huge 8 seat SUV for the family, it's only in rare circumstances when I have a conflict with kid hauling, and when that happens I just rent something for a day for $50. When (if) the wife goes back to work full time-ish, we'll get a third car like an A4 or 1M (if I get my way) with back seats.
You could get the Z and always trade in later, but if this might be the case, definatley buy a used car, that way you're not losing your shirt trading in 3 years.
