Yes it is. It is every bit as bad. German brands have their high tech proprietary tools, and any work not covered under warranty is ridiculously expensive, and if it's non-warranty work, you have to decide whether you're comfortable leaving the work up to a non-BMW mechanic. Some non-warranty repairs are too important to leave to some shlub.
