In the manual you can specifically see that it will take 87 in an emergency but they reco no more than half a tank so that you can dilute with 92-93 when you next get a chance.

I think the tech meant the parameters were tweaked specifically to a higher octane fuel. This is so they can be more agressive with the tuning. This also means using the higher octane is no longer "recommended" it is required.
