Birdman is correct, but the salesman could also be telling you the truth to a degree.

Even though the economy is terrible, the current Z supply isn't in the best shape. If the dealer just got this in, as you stated, and they believe they have a car that many people will want to buy, they can indeed sit on the price and wait for the right buyer.

I would search your local dealers, search autotrader and cars.com for the car you are looking for. Figure out how many of the model Z you want are out there. Decide what you want to spend and what your willing to spend at most, then start negotiating. As Birdman said, if they don't want to negotiate, always walk away. Sometimes you will get a call within a couple days with the dealer having a change of heart with regards to the price.

The bottom line is always the same. How bad do you want a particuliar car and how much are you willing to spend to get it. Just remember that while trying to negotiate the best deal you can, someone can walk in and buy it for the asking price. As long as you are willing to lose a car you want in search of a better deal, it should all work out in the end.
