That is probably a state thing, because from the accidents my family and friends have been in the past, bent frames haven't always resulted in a totaling of the car.

From my experience if the initial estimate (from the body shop) is less then 70-90% of the present value of the car (what they'd have to pay you to total it) then they will go for the repair.

Most insurers total at around 80% but not all. My barber bought a brand new bmw m3 a few years back with in a week a drunk driver rear ended him at ~50mph when he was stopped at a red, was about $38-39k of damage insurance wouldn't total it because they would have to pay him out some additional 8k or so.
