Consider your DSLR a once in a long time purchase and get as much performance as you can get. The Nikon D 7000 is getting great reviews and I would atke a look at it if I were you..
I was shopping for a DSLR and was looking at the Canon D60 (I have been using Canons since 1973 and am brand loyal). I went a little higher though and got the 7D and it is worht the extra bucks. Much beefier, better feel, performance, etc., and I expect this to be my last camera purchase for many years. IMO.
