How big is the hole? Humongous is relative. Foot size? Basket ball size? Bigger than a bread box?

You will definitely need mud. Just spend six bucks and buy a box of Beadex all purpose Topping. Though you get a lot its normally the cheapest way to go and you can find plenty of it at any Home Depot or Lowes.

You can either put a new piece of rock between the studs if its a big hole and then mud it back in with a spatula, or if its small enough, you just need something you can place in the hole and behind the drywall to create a backing for the mud you will use to fill the hole.
