ouch. yah, #400 might be too coarse and make the area whiter. if im going to sand it i would use more like #2000 and take my time use plenty of Prima Nero (or Aerospace 303 to lube while sanding).
if that was my car though, i would use a fireplace lighter and heat the scratch to get it back to the darker color. basically place the flame very close and then away and press the area using a bamboo chopstick.

if that fails i would remove the console and paint it or send it in for CF wrap.
