If they can just improve on the torque and mpg (both likely reasons for a possible hybrid assist setup) while keeping the car relatively light, I think the new rotary car would have much more appeal to a larger audience than the RX-8. Mazda has made it clear they are not interested in competing in the power department so I'd actually be impressed if the new rotary would come in somewhere in the 275 hp neighborhood.
