He could have a point if the spacers you're using actually don't match the wheel you're using. Make them show it to you, or check it yourself. You need to visually see this supposed damage to the wheel, and visually/mechanically verify that the spacer is of the correct shape to mate with the wheel and hub correctly. It's always possible you have the wrong model of spacer, or that something else minor is wrong (e.g. there needs to be a hub-centric ring on the inside or outside of the spacer and its missing?).
