To my knowledge it's 6 years from the production date of the car, as long as the car is not flagged as Gross Poluter (GP).

On my previous car, I decided to go FI. I got pulled over and was told to open the hood. Luckily the officer didn't know what he was looking at, but gave me a ticket to be check out by a state referee.
