I tried to tackle this misconception in another thread. It turns out that some manufacturers recommend against installing in an always-on configuration in their instructions. However, there is no technical reason for the sensors to fail electrically over time, and while there is still no evidence of one actually burning out there are numerous people reporting long lifespans.
I think the best comparison is to CCTV security cameras that will run fine 24/7/365 for years.
