260 degrees is no where near the temperature level where you would start worrying about head gasket failure. Do you think she was running the car at redline for an extended period of time? Burning coolant is a white smoke and will smell sweet while oil burning is indicated by blueish smoke with a burning oil smell. It is best to smell the exhaust once the car is warm as a cold start will inherently smell of unburnt fuel/particulates since the catalytic converters are not up to temp and burning off those particulates.
