I guess because I am used to riding a motorcycle for my DD which has no fuel gauge, I am used to paying attention to the last time I filled up and the trip odometer. I also fill up around a quarter tank just to be on the safe side.

Yes most fuel tanks are rounded on the bottom and top. The top drops quickly then you hit the wide middle stay there for a long time and then when you do hit bottom it falls like a rock.that is the automotive standard.
