It's been well known for a while that the car won't be AWD. The engine placement does not allow for the use of subaru's AWD system.
The engine will be a tuned up EJ20, or the new FB20. Subaru is currently planning to release only a turbo edition, while toyota is planning on releasing several. It's been known since the beginning that the car would be focused more on being lightweight and fun, rather than powerful.
This may all change, of course, since even the manufacturers don't know for sure what will happen at this point.

All over the suby boards (ex suby owner myself) it is known that there will NOT be a turbo motor for either brand right off the bat. The new FB20 motor is said to use toyota DI for a boost in power and mpg which will achieve 180hp. I'm just passing on the info I've been reading from several suby boards. Could be wrong info I suppose but a turbo has been out of the equation since the beginning of the year.
Also one has to think, 25-30k for a sub 200hp car. Sure it might be light, nimble and fun to drive but so is the 370z which actually has power to back it up. I just don't see many people paying the price for this car when so many other cars in it's price segment would out run it. Then again the miata sells decently so I guess there are those who will. A lot of people are saying the car is for cornering not speed. Then I think, I destroy miata's at the auto-x events I go to with my 370z and at the end of the day I can still pull a 13 sec 1/4 mile. Why oh why would I want an Ft-86 when for almost the same amount I can have a Z.
