Wether you leave space for safety or rock chips, driving on the Los Angeles freeways is nuts. If I am in a string of cars all going 80-85, in the fast lane, with nowhere to go, I have a jerk tail gating me. If I pull over a lane and let him by, so he can be stuck, one car ahead of me, another dildo rides my bumper. If I leave enough space for a safety margin, it will be filled by somebody else. So in LA tailgating is the norm.
