When you removed/installed the spring clip you had to push down on the tab that the brake pad pin goes through to slide the pin out. This is the pressure transmitted to the four corners of the spring clip. The angle on each corner assists in forcing the pads away from the rotor and keeping the pads aligned to the rotor. I would guess this also has a function in keeping the pads from rattling.
